Or, rather, did you know her?
I did not. But I do know of the generous grants and fellowships to poets and writers in her name. And I have come across her work.
It’s a bit funny because I wrote that poem many years ago when she and I were both in a poetry workshop taught by Bob Hass, and although I liked her, I wasn’t really old or mature enough to respect her. And I had no idea of her reputation. I didn’t know until just now that she died at home, suddenly and unexpectedly. Another ghost.
