Before Dawn

The restless, flickering midnight eyes
Like low lamps in the dark cannot close.
Falling on a wire grid, electric in the skin,
Fear blazes like sirens, ear-splitting and hot
As branding knives, fighting my flight.
Self- defeated lids heavy as stone rest
Ajar for evil spirits to freely pass, taking
And taking until a profoundly empty dawn.
